Stockholm-Västerås Airport

Stockholm-Västerås Airport, also known as Västerås Airport or Hässlö Flygplats (IATA: VST, ICAO: ESOW) is located at the city Västerås, and about 110 kilometres (68 mi) west of Stockholm, Sweden. It is located far outside the Stockholm Municipality and Stockholm County, but uses the name Stockholm-Västerås anyway.

Ground transport

Travel from the airport to Stockholm Central Station may be done via Flygbussarna, private bus coach service, and takes approximately one and a half hours.

Incidents and accidents

• On September 1, 2002, Ryanair Flight 685 from Stockholm-Västerås Airport to London Stansted was delayed by several hours after Kerim Chatty, a Swedish man of Arabic descent, was detained after attempting to board the aircraft with a loaded gun in his hand luggage. Subsequent media reports suggested that he was going to hijack the aircraft and crash it into the United States Embassy in London;^[3] however, Sweden's Security Service, Säpo, denied the claims and called the reports "false information".^[4] No confirmation of these allegations was found in the following police investigation and trial^[5] and the man was cleared of all terrorism-related charges.^[6] The man said that he usually carries a gun and forgot to remove it from his hand baggage before this journey.
